Hello!
Elizabeth Fry Toronto provides gender-based programs for women, gender diverse individuals and their families, providing the necessary supports to help people rebuild their lives. Many of our clients require support accessing items that are a basic need such as clothing, hygiene care, or items for their children’s well-being. We also have many clients we support entering their first stable housing, and require items to build a home.
Women are the fastest-growing incarcerated population, with 82% of incarcerated women jailed for behaviors linked to poverty and trauma. Women’s criminalization cannot be separated from experiences of violence. 86% of federally-incarcerated women have experienced gender base violence, many criminalized for acts of self-defense or engaging in survival strategies to flee. Elizabeth Fry addresses these through our free counselling programs, supported housing, Just in Time program, employment supports, parenting programs, newcomer programs, etc.
