Equip to Serve

Location: Oakville,
Ontario

Since 2011, we have been going down to a poor rural mountain area of Jamaica to teach music literacy, music instruments, robotics, and other creative arts skills.   Both primary and high schools do not have music classrooms, instruments, teaching resources, etc., and many music teachers themselves have not had training themselves.  Having grown up there until the age of fourteen, I am keenly aware of this very practical need which, at the moment, cannot be met without help from outside Jamaica.

We have used the facilities of a Polish Catholic mission compound which hosts our music summer week-long academy.   Approximately 75 participants attend each summer.  This mission compound is located in St. Elizabeth which was the worst hit area of Jamaica in Hurricane Melissa.  We are headed back down in July and have been asked to bring care packages for the individuals who attend our music and creative arts academy. We provide morning light breakfasts, a hot lunch, and afternoon snacks each day at no cost to participants.  There is no cost to attend our music academy;  we simply ask for a commitment to attend all five days.  All our teachers are volunteers from Ontario who pay their own way.

Having been asked by our associates in Jamaica to bring care packages for the participants who have suffered so much loss in Hurricane Melissa, we would like to take down care personal care kits for each one who attends our academy in July, 2026.
