Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS) is a registered non‐profit society operating in the Nanaimo and Parksville communities on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. ICCS helps people who experience a housing or mental health crisis gain stability and find the support and resources they need so they can recover and be well.
Currently, we run 12 programs across 7 sites where we address the needs of over 250 individuals a day who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our programs range from emergency shelter, through crisis stabilization, to long term supportive housing and transition to independent and subsidized housing.
We support people through empathy, hospitality, active listening and encouragement. We shelter people with buildings, security, and daily routines and structure. In most programs, the first goal is to reduce feelings of threat, so people feel safe and able to make plans for their recovery and wellness. We then assist with developing goals, habits, and skills for independence and connection.
Most of our clients arrive with nothing, even the basics of hygiene and clothing. Those who transition to more independent housing, likewise have little to take with them. The help of Kits for a Cause to give them the dignity of these essentials will allow them to move forward in recovery – and hope.
