About Kidango
Founded in 1979 in California, Kidango is the largest nonprofit provider of preschool and early learning services in the San Francisco Bay Area. Serving over 4,000 children and their families across more than 50 centers in Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa Counties, Kidango’s mission is ensuring every child is on a path to thrive in kindergarten and life. Its vision is to empower human potential to create a loving, compassionate, and equitable world.

Early Learning Programs
Kidango operates infant, toddler, and preschool programs built on child-centered, research-based, domain-specific learning strategies developed by early childhood education experts. The curriculum balances teacher-guided group activities with child-directed exploration, giving children the time and space to get deeply involved in learning. Paired with rigorous assessment tools that measure each student’s needs and gains, Kidango’s approach targets instructional practices that directly improve learning outcomes while providing nurturing, responsive caregiving and developmentally appropriate experiences. The program is designed to include all children, regardless of home language or ability, and prioritizes safety, health, well-being, and holistic development across every domain. Staff at every level receive ongoing professional development training and in-classroom coaching to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction across all sites.
Social-Emotional Development
Kidango teachers promote social and emotional learning using the Pyramid Model, a nationally recognized framework endorsed by the California Department of Education. Through Pyramid Model strategies, teachers help children learn to recognize and express their emotions, develop self-regulation and problem-solving skills, and build positive friendships – all grounded in strong, trusting relationships with children, families, and colleagues. These practices also foster resilience and empathy, equipping children with the social-emotional foundation they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Early Intervention and Mental Health
For children with developmental delays or behavioral health needs, Kidango provides free early intervention and inclusion services through partnerships with regional centers. Developmental specialists and mental health consultants work with children and teachers in the classroom or as required, to deliver targeted support within an inclusive model where all learners participate and thrive alongside their peers.
Nutrition
Kidango operates its own state-of-the-art kitchen, preparing thousands of fresh, nutritious meals and snacks daily and providing them free of charge to children at all centers. Every menu is carefully balanced to support the whole development of the child, fueling the physical energy needed for active play and gross motor growth, the cognitive focus required for learning, and the steady nutrition that underpins healthy social-emotional regulation. Meals are served family-style, which itself becomes a learning experience – children practice turn-taking, build conversational skills, develop independence by serving themselves, and establish healthy eating habits that carry well beyond the classroom.
Advocacy & Policy
As the largest child care provider in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kidango operates at the nexus of practice, policy, and research. The Advocacy and Policy team designs and advances policy solutions that uplift the voices and perspectives of families and child care professionals. Through state-level legislation, grassroots organizing, and direct engagement with educators and parents, the team works to close the opportunity and readiness gaps for the Bay Area’s youngest learners. Their priorities are shaped by focus groups and insights drawn directly from Kidango classrooms and staff, and are grounded in the conviction that California must sustain its momentum toward the transformative system changes outlined in the Master Plan for Early Learning and Care.
Research & Policy
Kidango’s Research and Policy team ensures that the organization’s advocacy and program design are grounded in evidence. Through data analysis, program evaluation, and applied research, the team studies outcomes in child development, literacy, workforce compensation, and family well-being to inform policy positions at both the state and local levels. By connecting what happens in Kidango’s classrooms to the broader policy landscape, the team helps translate on-the-ground insights into actionable, evidence-based recommendations that support a professionally and financially sustainable early care and education system.
