We are one of the original eight Metis Settlements in Canada. Our community is located 90 kilometres north of High Prairie in Alberta. We have a population of approximately 750 people.
Our local government does not get support from Canada or Indigenous Services, we often get by on grants and contributions. Our department, Nisohkamatotan which means Let’s Help Each Other, in Cree, offers as much support, primarily referral and advocacy services to our client families. An oil company donated to our food pantry, which is similar to a food bank. We try to help families with Back to School costs but this year we do not have any grants that can help us do that. This is where my hope comes to you, if you could help our community.
I have tried to find a charity #, but we do not have one. We used to be on the qualified donee list on the CRA site, but I can only see our head office, the Metis Settlements General Council, on it. Unless that would suffice.
What my department is asking for is support in terms of your back to school kits and your hygiene kits. We have approximately 160 kids from Aboriginal Headstart (preschool) to Grade 12.
If needed, there is a budget item that can cover some of the costs under our family violence prevention program.
