SHORE Centre is a pro-choice reproductive and sexual health organization dedicated to providing safe, confidential, non-directed and non-judgmental information and support for anyone experiencing unplanned pregnancy. Our services are inclusive of all genders, orientations, abilities, ages and cultures.
Launched in 2019, SHORE Centre’s Empowering Pregnancy program offers prenatal outreach support services for people in Waterloo Region who have decided to continue an unplanned pregnancy and become parents for the first time OR for newcomer families who are experiencing pregnancy for the first time in Canada. Recognizing that unplanned pregnancies often present unique challenges and barriers including delayed access to prenatal care, increased risk for relational and housing insecurity, mental health concerns, and financial stress, our Perinatal Support Outreach worker supports families with a range of emotional, social, and material support services to help reduce stressors, increase access and connection, prepare for birth and have safer, supported pregnancies and postpartum periods . For our newcomer families especially, we offer extensive support with systems navigation and advocacy to increase wellbeing and belonging within community.
A substantial and highly sought after component of our Empowering Pregnancy program is our care closet, where we provide financial aid in the form of diapers, wipes, formula, grocery cards, maternity and baby clothing, newborn accessories, and other basic needs items on a monthly basis to families with financial need. Unfortunately with the rising costs of living and increased housing and food insecurity, the demand and community need is far greater than we can meet. With support from Kits for a Cause, SHORE Centre could continue to offer a prenatal baby box full of essentials for expectant parents and infants, ensuring that families in Waterloo Region have a supported start during a critical, vulnerable time.
