The Healing Place

Location: Louisville,
Kentucky

The mission of The Healing Place is to reach more men and women struggling with addiction, provide the tools for their recovery and restore productive lives. We seek to provide a limited-barrier access to addiction recovery services to the underserved and continue to be a safety net for the community.

Since 1989, The Healing Place (THP) has evolved into one of the most effective long term social model recovery programs in the United States. It provides an indispensable service to Louisville Metro and beyond by helping adult men and women recover at no cost and with limited barriers from substance addiction. THP accepts all people regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.

THP accommodates an overnight shelter to homeless men and women. In addition, it provides detoxification services and an award-winning recovery program for those who wish to take the next steps toward sobriety, as well as transitional care. Clients also receive medical care and healthcare education in the clinic staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and University of Louisville medical students.

THP’s unique and innovative program offers a full continuum of care and recovery at no cost to the client. These services include: 1000 beds a night with an average client stay of six to nine months in the recovery program, 1 million meals + served annually, a non-medical detoxification program, recovery education classes, accountability meetings, leadership peer mentoring, transitional care services, education/vocational goals, financial obligations, legal matters, and familial aide.

In the 30 year history of working with our clients, THP has an extensive history in assessing various supportive resources in our community and has excellent relationships with all social service providers. THP has most recently been ensuring that all participants have secured health insurance either privately or through the state’s Medicaid system. THP staff also assists clients in securing SNAP benefits when appropriate and other forms of assistance. Clients who are in need of a GED are enrolled in local classes to assist in their successful testing for the GED and are supported in working through the process.
