Project Title: Liberating Pupils/Children with Special Needs of the Baptist Mission Primary School
in armed conflict zones in Bamenda the North West Region of Cameroon from Stigmatizations,
Marginalization, Ignorance, Acute Poverty and Misery via the provision of holistic support.
Project Summary:
19th March, 2025.
History indicates that prior to independence in the early 1960s; Cameroon was formerly two separate
territories with two different languages (French and English), cultures and traditions etc and united to
become a single country respecting each other’s culture, language and systems of education. All along, the
English Speaking Regions of the united Cameroon have been complaining of marginalization by the
majority French speaking Cameroon until 2016 when Lawyers and teachers from the English Speaking
Regions of Cameroon began a street protest which has degenerated into armed conflicts between some
English Speaking Separatist Groups and the military of the central administration with its multiplier effects
being killings, destruction and burning of properties being the effects of the armed conflicts as many English
Speaking refugees are found in neighboring countries and across the globe and also Internally Displaced
Persons – (IDPs) including Children/Pupils with Special Needs which this project is intended to address
or assist. The Anglophone crisis has degenerated into an armed conflict between the secessionist and the
Cameroon military which escalation has led to the destruction of many villages instilling a negative impact
on the population and depriving them of all human rights with many children (Special Need) being exposed
to violence and most of them have lost hopes in pursuing their dreams and aspiration. Over 437.000 people
including children/pupils with Special Needs in particular have been Internally Displaced particularly in
Bamenda and others seeking refuge in neighbouring Nigeria (2018 UN CRISIS REPORT).
There has been continuous confrontation between the armed secessionist fighters and the military across
cities, towns and communities in the English Speaking Regions of Cameroon resulting in the loss of lives
and the destruction/burning of properties living the occupant’s homeless and businesses crumbled. So many
people living in this regions and communities have fled to neighbouring countries and other towns and
communities of the French Speaking regions of Cameroon while others are hiding in bushes with majority
of them being women and children as the violence persists and humanitarian assistance becomes inadequate.
Almost all sectors of the population are affected but those with Special Needs (children/pupils) are greatly
affected as per their physical and psychological situation being one of the reasons for this Concept Note as
it is our wish that some of their challenges are addressed.
As a result of the ongoing armed conflict in the North West Region of Cameroon, about two hundred
children/pupils with Special Needs (Albinos, Deaf, Dumb, Mental Health Disorder, Autism, Physically
Challenged etc) have relocated to Bamenda the capital town of the North West Region. These groups of
children with different types of challenges have only the Cameroon Baptist Convention Complex Primary School available to give them some sort of primary or elementary education with their very limited resources
as it is also the case with their parents or guardians.
